Retail Credit Card ProcessingStep 1The merchant slides the customer’s card through the credit card terminal and enters the dollar amount. The terminal via the phone line/cable line connects to First Capital payments processor for authorization. Step 2First Capital Payment then passes the information to the issuing bank (bank that issues the credit card to the customer) to verify if the card is valid and if the amount is available. Step 3The issuing bank sends a message back to FCP accepting or declining the transaction. Step 4FCP passes this information back to the credit card terminal which prints out a receipt for the customer to sign if the card is approved. This whole process takes approximately 15-18 with a phone line and approximately 8 to 10 seconds with internet connection. Step 5At the end of the day the merchant settles the daily transactions by batching out. Once the merchant initiates the batches out funds are transferred from the issuing bank (customer's bank) to the acquiring bank (merchant’s bank) Steps 1 through 5 are completed within 8 -15 seconds depending on whether the merchant used the phone line or Internet connection to relay information to FCP.
